About the course

Customized is for the guitarist who already knows what they want to play. Instead of following a level, we start from the goal — a Trinity Rock & Pop or Rockschool grade, a college audition, the set your band has to perform in six weeks, or the twenty songs by one artist you have always meant to get right — and build the syllabus backwards from it. The first class is a planning session: you play, we listen, and we agree on what finished looks like and by when.

The teaching format is the same one-to-one online class as any other course, but the material is yours. Some students spend the whole course on four exam pieces and their technical work. Others rebuild a right hand full of self-taught habits, learn to read charts quickly for session work, or write and record their own songs. Because the plan is written down and dated, you always know which week you are in and exactly what still stands between you and the goal.

What you’ll be able to do

Perform the repertoire your plan was built around, from memory or from a chart as the goal requires.
Meet the technical requirements of the grade or audition you are preparing, at the tempos it specifies.
Work to a written syllabus with dated milestones you can check off yourself.
Practise from a structured routine that separates technique, repertoire and reading.
Read the notation your goal actually uses, whether that is staff notation, tab or chord charts.
Diagnose your own playing problems and choose the exercise that fixes each one.
Record a clean take of at least one piece for an exam submission, an audition or a portfolio.
Play a full piece through from start to finish without stopping, including recovering from a slip.

How a class runs

One-to-one online, with the teacher watching both hands throughout

How we measure progress

A tempo log for every technical exercise, so speed gains are recorded rather than remembered
Video takes of the repertoire at intervals, so improvement is visible
Milestone check-ins against the written plan
Mock exam or mock audition run-throughs before the real one
A closing performance or recording that completes the plan

Prerequisites

Before you start

Two things to check: where you are as a player, and what you need in the room.

Experience

A clear goal, and enough playing behind you for that goal to be realistic. As a floor, that is roughly the content of Guitar Level 1: open chords changed without looking, single-note melodies in first position, and the ability to keep time. Customized is not a beginner course — if you have never held a guitar, Guitar Level 1 takes you further and faster, and you can move into Customized afterwards. If you are unsure whether your goal fits the time you have, say so in the demo class and we will tell you honestly rather than take the booking.

Equipment

A guitar in playable condition, plus picks, a tuner, a stable internet connection and a webcam positioned so both hands are visible. Anything the goal itself demands — a capo for a particular arrangement, an amp and overdrive for a band set, a metronome for grade technical work — we list in the first class rather than ask you to gather in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Customized just a normal level with songs I choose?

No. A level has a fixed syllabus and covers everything a player at that stage needs. Customized deliberately skips whatever your goal does not require, and goes much deeper into what it does. If you need a grade in five months, we spend the time on the set pieces, scales and aural tests for that grade, and nothing else.

Can you prepare me for a Trinity Rock & Pop or Rockschool grade?

Yes. We work from the current syllabus book for your grade and cover the set pieces, the technical exercises, the session skills or improvisation section, and the aural and sight-reading tests. Entering for the exam itself is done by you through the board or an exam centre — we prepare you and run mock exams, but we are not an exam centre.

What if my goal turns out to be too ambitious for the time I have?

We will say so, either in the demo class or at the midway review. Usually the fix is to narrow the target rather than abandon it: three audition pieces instead of five, or a grade entered in the next session rather than this one. A plan you can actually meet is worth more than an optimistic one you cannot.

I am self-taught with bad habits. Is this the right course?

It is often the best fit, because a level would make you repeat material you already know while leaving the habits untouched. We identify the specific problems — usually thumb position, wrist angle, excess left-hand pressure or unmuted strings — and rebuild them inside repertoire you care about, so the correction does not feel like starting again.
